The time is right for political lobby and advocacy
Jan 19 2009, 2:29 PM EST | Post edited: Jan 19 2009, 2:29 PM EST
President Obama has on several occasions indicated his willingnes to advocate equal rights and opportunities for gays, last but not least the right of people who live openly as gays to serve in the military. The UN has for the first time tabled a motion to actively seek decriminalisation of homosexuality among member states. New president Atta-Mills has put improvement of human rights so all Ghanaians can feel safe in the country, as priority point on his agenda. The time is rife to start an active advocacy campaign and political lobby for decriminalisation of homosexuality and protection against discrimination. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Yes, the time is okay but there is lots of things to do before. The LGBTIQ community in the country first need to be enpowered to understand what sexuality means. Most of teh people i have personally talk to feel they are evil people who can be cured.

if you have such a community, it makes it very difficult to advocate for their rights. The question that also comes from authorities is who are these people and where do they live? if the community first accept their sexuality and are enpowered,, then we can holistically lead a big time advocacy program for the country. I know it is possible but we need the resources and the people who will be selfless and willing to stand in the gab.
We can start something anyway!

Something inside so strong!!

This is a bit like the chicken and the egg! Do we have to change everyone before we can take action or are people changed in the process of action? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

This should not be a question that confuses you. When dealing with politicians you have to think and be as tricky as they are. You need to look behind the question at what they are really saying to you.

This wiki can be a vehicle to achieve what you have stated. Firstly it can be used to educate and empower the gay community. For that purpose it is important to try to give people access to the information, that is, to propagate the site as communication platform to as many gay people as possible; make it interesting for them to keep on visiting the site if they see something is happening.
Then we can use the platform to organise advocacy. There are funds available. HIVOS is supporting gay emancipation financially. But to be able to get access to funding I believe we first need to grow to a significant membership, get a group of active and committed ghanaians to form a core group that operates as a face to the outside world (maybe register as CSO), and develop a plausible programme of action. As a new group you first have to establish some credibility before you can access external funding. Funds are a means, not a goal. Like you said we first need to get a group of selfless activists together and start doing things to show the world that it is not just an empty blabla group. There are things that can be done without resources. Lets start with that and show them we are serious.
