Homosexuality an imported vice
Dec 22 2008, 12:04 PM EST
I do not believe that homosexuality is a vice imported from Western cultures, hence a phenominon strange to African Culture, like many African leaders, notably the erate dictator of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe, claim. However Christianity and the laws condemning gay sex are.

Actually I have some sympathy with this position as I do believe that something has been imported. And I also oppose it.Traditionally same-sex behaviour has existed in Africa as precisely that - behaviour. Now, something is being imported. Something that some of us have started to reject in our own cultures. And that something is the North American notion of identity politics. Now it seems same-sex behaviour is not something that you DO, it is who you ARE. The 1 hour a week (OK I know some of your guys get more!) that you spend in your bedroom now determines your whole identity! So when I hear Ghanaians say they are 'gay' I consider it form a shorthand. And when they say it's who they are, I despair. It seems to the same thing in all areas of life - Ghana chases what it thinks is modern without looking at the consequences. I am anti-gay. Sometimes I pretentiously say I'm post-gay. I sleep with men but I would hate to say it's who I am - I hope I'm more interesting than that! 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
