Is Religion Hurting Ghana? This is a featured page

Am not writing this to bash religion but am writing this because this thoughts has made me realize something about something. I realized that a large reason behind the bigotry and discrimination toward GLBT in Ghana or Africa is because of religion. Not only is it because of religion but also because a significant number of people refuse to choose what to believe and simply follow their religion blindly.
According to a research, estimates from 2004, 0.5% of Ghanaians are not religious. Of the remaining 99.5% of Ghanaians, I would say 45-60% of those follow their religious leaders blindly and if the religious leaders say the sky is green, they would believe it. I estimate another 20% do actually think for themselves, but are afraid to publicly oppose the stance of their religion. Then you have another 10-15% who do actually challenge what their religion says with the remainder being loosely affiliated with their religion. These are my estimates not facts.
When I do the math I realize that probably 45-60% of Ghanaians oppose same gender relationships solely because their religion says so and they do not have a good argument otherwise. So in Ghana, the land of FREEDOM AND JUSTICE, why do so many people not think for themselves? After the world has nominate Ghana as a peaceful and freedom country in Africa. So why is it that some locations in Africa now allow gay sex, yet Ghana is still bound by their religious leaders?
I do not know the answer. I do not know why Ghana do not make their own decisions. Maybe the political activism in Ghana has died away? I have no doubt it will come back, but when was the last time there were major organized political protests in Ghana? Maybe there is some other reason entirely? Whatever the answer one has to ask, if religion is such a large part of Ghana’s values what type of influence good or bad has this blind following of religion had on the current Ghana? As we always says 'AS3M B3BA DABI !'

You are on the right track. I think it starts with the educational system: Ghana schools teach children to listen and copy what the teacher tells them and then repeat it literally at the next exam. It does not teach children to think...! They dont learn thinking and reasoning logically. They are rewarded just for copying. So there is no initiative; there is no free thought. You do as you're told. By teachers, by pastors. That is why Ghana is such a bountiful territory for European and American Evengelical missionaries. Nobody will question their stories. They can build their little religious empires unopposed. That is why the irrational creation story from the big Christian Fairytale book are tought in schools rather than the scientifically substantiated and in the western world gererally accepted teachings of Darwin. Free thought needs to be learned. If you want to learn more go to www.atheistnexus.org , not necessarily to take your religion away from you, but to start thinking and understanding that the world makes just as much sense or maybe even more so, without the dogmatic beliefs in unrealistic stories.
