2009 has already seen the best of times and worst of times. The global financial crisis has brought untold misery to millions around the world as joblessness rises and poverty follows. Ghana will be hit in tourism and money transfers from relatives outside Ghana. Gold will stay strong and so too will cocoa as people eat more sweets in hard economic times.

This uplifting news is that personal freedoms for gays will improve this year in many countries and there is likely to be spill over effects for Ghana. Ghana is a freedom loving country with generally tolerant views and a peaceful, civil society. As more countries sign up to the UN declaration to support de-criminalisation of homosexuality, Ghana is unlikely to be left looking like a harsh and old-fashioned nation, especially since the Obama administration has thrown its considerable moral support behind the campaign along with most other liberal democracies.
